Okocha and KANU encouraged me - John Utaka

Former Super Eagles attacker, John Utaka has ascribed his football achievements to Ex-Super Eagles legends Austin Jay-Jay Okocha and Nwankwo Kanu.

Utaka was recently assigned as Montepellier u19 coach. He, however, praised the smartness and technical ability of Kanu.

'Kanu competed in the Olympic Games. He inspired me a lot because he was not a fast player, but he is very smart and very technical in games,' Utaka told the Montpellier website.

Utaka also stated that when he got his maiden call up in 2000, Kanu was present with Okocha. Utaka then went ahead to describe playing with such legends as a dream come true.

'When I got my first call-up to Nigeria in 2000, he was there with Okocha, and for me it was. I was watching them on TV, and there I was playing with them. It was a dream fulfilled.'

He finally stated that Kanu and Okocha supported him and made sure he avoids fear to become brave.

'They encouraged me by telling me not to be afraid to express myself as I knew how to do and especially to listen to the coaches. It was good advice.'

Utaka earned a total of 49 caps for the West African powerhouse before hanging his boots in 2012.
